Eight years ago I was living in Huntsville, Alabama and was just starting to build my photography business. I had spent time getting to know my camera, and was ready to start working with families.. so I reached out to some lifelong church camp friends, the McCaghrens. We spent a fun morning in the park with their kiddos and you can see those early year photos HERE . If you understand the bond between souls who grow up together going to church camp you know that 8 years can go by and things can pick right back up where they were. Now, eight years later and with two teenage children, the McCaghrens again opened their home for me and my camera as I am transitioning back into family photography. After a year medical sabbatical and spending years in the wedding industry, getting my feet wet in participating and crafting a family photo experience has been a little daunting for me.

I showed up to their home a ball of nerves, and actually pretty unprepared for appropriate prompts and directions for a grown-up family. These friends showed me so much grace, and as we spent the afternoon laughing and telling stories of our failures and triumphs and change of hears over the past 10 years. Brandon and Lindsey have built a beautiful community of people in Decatur through their Jiu Jitsu Gym , 10th Planet . Not to mention they have both become black belts in the art of Jiu Jitsu. This experience showed me that while I’m still on my a-game when it comes to working with my camera, I’ve got some brushing up to do in my direction of family photo shoots.. which I can’t wait to dive into.
